Educational Trip to Xugana Island Lodge – Okavango Delta.

The Think Africa Ladies had the privilege of visiting Xugana Island Lodge on an educational trip to the Okavango Delta. It was an unforgettable experience filled with breathtaking scenery, warm hospitality, and moments that reminded us why the Okavango Delta in Botswana is one of the most magical safari destinations in the world.

In addition, the Okavango Delta offers a unique combination of waterways, wildlife, and peaceful safari experiences.

Our journey began on Saturday with a scenic flight from Maun to Xugana aboard Safari Air. Upon landing at Xugana Airstrip, we were warmly welcomed by Collen, our guide for the trip. His detailed briefing immediately set the tone for the experience ahead.

Soon afterwards, we glided across the Delta’s sparkling waterways on a boat transfer to Xugana Island Lodge. Along the way, Collen shared fascinating insights into the Delta’s ecosystem and rich birdlife. As a result, it became the perfect introduction to this remarkable African wilderness.

Arriving at the lodge felt like stepping into a dream. The staff welcomed us with singing, warm smiles, and refreshing drinks. Chawa and Mr Andy, the camp managers, then guided us through the lodge and introduced us to the main area, boma, bar, and swimming pool.

Our interleading rooms overlooked the Munachira Lagoon. The rooms were spacious, elegant, and beautifully prepared by our housekeeper, Aggie.

After settling in, we relaxed by the pool before enjoying cakes and lemonade during siesta time. Later that afternoon, we headed out on our first safari activity — a boat cruise through the Delta channels.

During the cruise, Collen explained that the Okavango Delta sits on ancient Kalahari sands. These sands act like a sponge and help shape this remarkable ecosystem. Seeing the sandy bottom through the crystal-clear water brought this fascinating fact to life.

Delta Experiences at Xugana Island Lodge

We later visited the mokoro station, where Promise guided us on a peaceful mokoro excursion. Gliding through the narrow channels in a traditional dugout canoe felt both calming and deeply grounding. It was a truly authentic Okavango Delta safari experience.

Sunday morning began with a wake-up call from the camp manager, followed by a light breakfast before our guided bush walk. During the walk, we encountered an elephant and her calf near the lagoon. In addition, we spotted a baby crocodile basking in the sun. It was a magical moment and another reminder of the Delta’s raw beauty.

After the bush walk, we headed to the helicopter airstrip for a scenic flight over the Okavango Delta. The aerial views were breathtaking. Winding waterways, lush islands, and wildlife below gave us a completely new appreciation for this iconic African landscape.

Following the helicopter scenic flight, we transferred to Camp Okavango for a site inspection. Trunic, the camp manager, welcomed us at the airstrip. Once again, the staff greeted us with singing and dancing.

The rooms at Camp Okavango were beautifully designed and blended naturally with the surrounding environment. We also explored the pool area and the Love Nest, a romantic hideaway ideal for honeymooners, anniversaries, and private dinners.

After lunch, we returned to Xugana by boat to collect our bags before flying back to Maun. We left with full hearts, unforgettable memories, and a deeper appreciation for the Okavango Delta.

Reflections from Onalenna

What always stands out to me about the Okavango Delta is its remarkable sense of harmony. Beneath this lush paradise lies ancient Kalahari sand, a foundation that predates almost everything growing above it.

This sand absorbs and filters water flowing from Angola, allowing the Delta to spread into its iconic shape.

“People often imagine the Okavango as a swamp. However, standing here feels more like discovering a tropical oasis in the middle of the desert. Papyrus stands tower above you, palm trees sway in the breeze, and reeds line the water’s edge. The contrast is extraordinary — desert sands below and vibrant life above.”

Exceptional Hospitality at Xugana Island Lodge

A special mention must go to our waiter, Ashley, who truly elevated our stay at Xugana Island Lodge.

From warm morning greetings to attentive service throughout the day, Ashley consistently delivered exceptional hospitality. Whether in the main area, beside the pool, or during dinner service, his attention to detail stood out.

In particular, his calm confidence and natural elegance created a memorable dining experience. During dinner, he described each wine with such clarity and passion that it felt as though he knew every bottle personally.

Ashley’s professionalism, warmth, and genuine passion for hospitality left a lasting impression on all of us. Without a doubt, he has a very bright future ahead of him.
