During our transfer to camp, elephants appeared almost immediately, offering a fitting welcome to the wilderness. Accompanied by our guide, Tshepo, whose passion and detailed understanding of the Delta ecosystem brought the landscape to life, every moment became an opportunity to learn more about this extraordinary environment.

Our suite exceeded every expectation.

Spacious and beautifully designed, the accommodation featured a luxurious bedroom and elegant lounge area. There was also a fully stocked minibar, tea and coffee station, and a selection of homemade treats. Large decks overlooked the floodplains, offering uninterrupted views of the surrounding wilderness.

One particularly memorable feature was the integration of modern comforts, rarely found in such remote locations. Thoughtfully incorporated technology, including a discreet television positioned beside the bed, added an unexpected element of indulgence without detracting from the safari experience.

The bathroom was equally spectacular. A signature freestanding bathtub overlooked the Delta floodplains, while indoor and outdoor showers provided a strong connection with the natural surroundings. From the comfort of the bath, we could watch the landscape transform throughout the day. It became one of the most memorable aspects of our stay.

Each meal was thoughtfully prepared, beautifully presented and executed with remarkable attention to detail. Whether enjoying lunch overlooking the floodplains or gathering for an elegant evening dinner, we found that every dining experience celebrated fresh ingredients and innovative flavours.

One standout evening featured a sophisticated Asian-inspired menu. It demonstrated the culinary team’s versatility and expertise. Throughout our stay, the chefs consistently delivered dishes that matched the high standards evident throughout the property.

Wildlife Encounters in a Wildlife-Rich Concession

The Xigera concession offers exceptional safari opportunities across both land and water. Guests can explore floodplains, woodland islands and waterways that support abundant wildlife throughout the year. Sightings commonly include elephant, buffalo, lechwe, zebra, giraffe, lion, leopard, wild dog, hippo and crocodile. Meanwhile, bird enthusiasts can search for species such as Pel’s Fishing Owl, along with a remarkable variety of waterbirds and raptors.

Our first afternoon game drive quickly showcased the area’s potential. Highlights included elephants, a lioness resting beneath a tree and, most memorably, four male lions roaring and communicating across the landscape. Witnessing such powerful behaviour in the wild was an extraordinary reminder of the raw beauty of Botswana’s wilderness.

The following morning delivered another succession of remarkable sightings, including buffalo, giraffe, antelope species and a beautiful leopard encounter. The stunning combination of palm islands, golden grasslands and Delta waterways created a constantly changing backdrop for our safari adventures.

Exploring the Delta by Water

A Delta safari would not be complete without experiencing the waterways that define this unique ecosystem.

Our boat excursion provided a completely different perspective of the landscape. We moved quietly through channels lined with reeds and papyrus. As we travelled, we experienced the tranquillity and beauty that have made the Okavango Delta one of Africa’s most celebrated wilderness areas.

Later, from a scenic sundowner location overlooking expansive floodplains, we enjoyed another unforgettable moment. A leopard crossed nearby before disappearing into the trees. It reinforced a theme that remained consistent throughout our stay: at Xigera, wildlife is never far away.

The Magic of Mokoros and the Iconic Baobab Treehouse

Among Xigera’s signature experiences is the traditional mokoro excursion. Gliding silently along narrow Delta channels in a dugout-style canoe offers an intimate connection with nature. It also provides a fascinating way to observe smaller details of the ecosystem that are often missed on game drives.

The unforgettable experience was our visit to the world-renowned Baobab Treehouse. Located approximately one kilometre from the lodge, this architectural masterpiece rises nearly ten metres above the floodplain. The striking steel sculpture was inspired by Botswana’s iconic baobab trees. Guests can enjoy sundowners, private dining, or spend a night beneath the stars in complete seclusion, surrounded by the sounds of the African wilderness.

This extraordinary structure has become one of Botswana’s most distinctive safari experiences and perfectly reflects Xigera’s innovative spirit.
