Immersed in the Wild
Experiencing Botswana’s Wilderness
From the moment we touched down at the Kanana airstrip, we were welcomed with warmth and genuine hospitality. Located in the southwest region of the Okavango Delta, Kanana offers an intimate and immersive safari experience.
The refreshments and orientation on arrival immediately reflected the camp’s attention to detail and thoughtful service.
Our site inspection revealed the true charm of Kanana. Every element, from the layout to the décor, blended naturally with the surrounding wilderness. In addition, the tents felt spacious, beautifully maintained, and well-equipped with modern comforts.
One standout feature was the bathroom design. The outdoor-facing shower created a peaceful and unforgettable connection to nature.
Wildlife Encounters in Botswana
After high tea, we departed on an afternoon game drive that quickly became one of the highlights of the trip.
Near the Kanana sleepout deck, we witnessed two lions mating — a rare and captivating sighting. It was a powerful reminder of the Okavango Delta’s raw and untamed beauty.
Our guide, Onalenna, made the experience even more memorable. His knowledge of animal behaviour, tracking, and the Delta ecosystem added depth and meaning to every sighting.
We later visited the sleepout deck itself. The structure combines natural materials with understated luxury and allows guests to sleep beneath the stars in comfort and safety.
Shortly afterwards, we encountered three lionesses with nine cubs. It was an unforgettable moment and one that left a lasting impression on all of us.
The game drive ended with sundowners at a scenic location overlooking the Delta. Snacks and drinks were served as the sun disappeared below the horizon. The atmosphere felt peaceful, magical, and uniquely Botswana.
Authentic Safari Experiences
ack at camp, the evening continued around a welcoming fire. Guests gathered together while the staff performed traditional singing and dancing.
This joyful celebration of local culture added warmth and authenticity to the safari experience. Furthermore, the meals throughout our stay were exceptional, combining bold flavours with thoughtful presentation.
On our final morning, we enjoyed a relaxed breakfast before saying farewell to the staff. However, one final game drive still awaited us on the journey back to the airstrip.
We once again passed the mating lions from the previous evening, still resting near the sleepout deck. Then came a personal highlight — a leopard lying gracefully across an old tree branch.
Seeing a leopard had always been a dream of mine, and Kanana made that dream a reality.
As we approached the airstrip, a honey badger suddenly crossed our path, creating one final exciting sighting. Moments later, we spotted a male lion calmly sitting beside the red airstrip flag. It felt surreal and became the perfect ending to our Kanana safari experience.
Why Choose Kanana for a Botswana Safari
Kanana delivered an experience that felt truly extraordinary. From the warmth of the staff to the breathtaking beauty of the Okavango Delta, every moment combined comfort, wilderness, and authentic connection.
Ultimately, this journey deepened my appreciation for immersive safari experiences and reaffirmed the value of meaningful travel in Botswana’s wild spaces.
