Moremi Game Reserve

Located in the eastern section of the Okavango Delta, Moremi Game Reserve borders the southwestern reaches of Chobe National Park and encompasses nearly one-third of the Delta’s vast expanse. As part of the world’s largest inland delta, the reserve showcases an extraordinary variety of ecosystems—ranging from seasonal floodplains and papyrus-lined lagoons to open savannahs, acacia woodlands, Mopane forests, and expansive grasslands.

This diverse landscape supports an exceptional abundance of wildlife. Large herds of impala and tsessebe are common, while the dry season sees an influx of buffalo, wildebeest, elephants, and zebra migrating from the Kalahari in search of water and grazing. The elusive sitatunga and red lechwe antelope can be found along the Delta’s reedy waterways, while predators such as lion, cheetah, and African wild dog hunt across the open plains. Moremi is also a haven for birdlife, with over 400 species recorded—including African fish eagles, crested cranes, and sacred ibis. The reserve is a remarkable example of how diverse species of mammals, birds, reptiles, insects, and fish have successfully adapted to the Delta’s dynamic wetland conditions.

Game viewing in Moremi is superb year-round, with permanent water sources ensuring a constant presence of wildlife. The Khwai River area, in particular, is noted for its high density of both game and birdlife.

Access to Moremi is by light aircraft to lodge airstrips or via road from Maun. While fly-in safaris are the most convenient and popular option, adventurous travellers can explore the reserve by 4×4—though self-driving is recommended only for experienced off-road drivers and is best undertaken during the dry season. Summer rains between December and February can render many routes impassable, and some lodges may close during this period.

With its rich biodiversity, scenic beauty, and prolific wildlife sightings, Moremi Game Reserve offers one of the most rewarding and memorable safari experiences in Africa.
