Tau Pan
Tau Pan has been designed to blend in with and complement the surrounding environment of the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, the second largest game reserve in the world (52,800 km²), and is known for being one of Africa’s last true wilderness areas. This is a place to experience solitude and to feel dwarfed by the expansive landscape surrounding the camp.
Tau Pan is situated on a sand ridge overlooking a permanent water hole. Tau Pan features 9 custom-designed thatched chalets – 1 family chalet and 8 twin chalets – all designed with insulated walls to stay cool in the heat and warm in the cold, as temperatures in this region range vastly depending on the season. The rooms have private viewing decks with comfortable loungers, and the sliding doors allow guests to enjoy the view across the Kalahari plains from the comfort of their bed. Should they wish, guests can choose to swap their room for a night on the sleep-out deck and fall asleep under the vast African skies.
Tau Pan is situated on the edge of Tau Pan, one of the most beautiful and wildlife-rich areas of the Central Kalahari Game Reserve. The focal point of the main area is the fireplace around which the lounge, dining area and library are located, while the viewing deck overlooking the waterhole offers an ideal spot for game viewing as animals gather around for a drink.
Facilities at Tau Pan include:
- 8 twin chalets and 1 family chalet with insulated walls
- Private viewing decks with loungers
- Optional sleep-out deck under the stars
- Dining area, lounge and library centred around a fireplace
- Viewing deck overlooking a permanent waterhole
Why choose Tau Pan?
- Remote location in the heart of the Central Kalahari Game Reserve
- Authentic bush experience with San Bushmen walks
- Incredible seasonal wildlife migrations and predator sightings
- Unique desert scenery and vast open vistas

ACTIVITIES
Game drives are offered in the early morning and late afternoon, and guests can also enjoy a guided walk with San Bushmen. From November to March, when the rains are expected to fall, the Kalahari transforms as the plains and pans burst with flowers and sweet grass. Migratory species, including zebra and wildebeest, return to graze in their thousands. Predators such as lions, especially the famous Kalahari black-maned lion, cheetahs, leopards, jackals, brown hyenas and wild dogs are also found in the area.
During the dry season, May to September, the area retains many resident species that, together with the predators, congregate close to any surface water and pans. The abundant bird life includes the world’s heaviest flying bird – the Kori Bustard – and the commonly seen Black Korhaan, while ostriches are frequently seen roaming in large flocks. Tau Pan is in a national park and an ecologically sensitive area, so there is no driving off-road or at night.
