Kwando Lebala
In the far northern reaches of Botswana, where the Kwando River feeds into a network of seasonally shifting channels and lush floodplains, lies a landscape of immense beauty and rich biodiversity. This is the Kwando-Linyanti system, a remote wilderness of open plains, reed beds, and wetlands teeming with wildlife. Set within this untamed ecosystem, Lebala Camp—meaning “wide open spaces” in Setswana—offers an immersive safari experience defined by spectacular scenery and exceptional game viewing.
Positioned on the edge of expansive savannah and wetlands, Kwando Lebala Camp enjoys far-reaching views and a true sense of space and solitude. The camp’s intimate design blends comfort with wilderness immersion, making it ideal for travelers who want to explore one of Botswana’s most productive yet little-traveled safari regions.
Lebala accommodates guests in nine spacious canvas suites, including a two-bedroom family chalet. Each tent is built on a raised teak deck and features a large open-plan bedroom and lounge area, with expansive windows and a private veranda overlooking the floodplain. En suite bathrooms include a classic clawfoot bathtub and an outdoor reed-enclosed shower, offering the luxury of bathing under open skies.
A wooden footbridge leads to the camp’s main area, where guests are welcomed into a large, open-sided lounge and bar shaded beneath thatch and surrounded by the sights and sounds of the bush. The plunge pool and sun deck provide a cool refuge during the day, with panoramic views over the plains. At the rear of the camp, a raised platform beneath shady trees offers a peaceful place to watch birds and game drifting across the wetlands. Meals are served in the thatched dining area, and evenings end around the campfire beneath the stars—sharing stories, sipping a nightcap, and listening to the calls of the wild.
Facilities at Kwando Lebala Camp include:
- Nine canvas suites including one family chalet
- Private decks with views over floodplains and wetlands
- Clawfoot bathtubs and outdoor showers in every suite
- Plunge pool with loungers and viewing deck
- Lounge, bar, open-sided dining room, and evening campfire
Why choose Kwando Lebala Camp?
- Remote location in the wildlife-rich Kwando-Linyanti floodplain
- Exceptional predator sightings and a high diversity of species
- Night drives with spotlighting for elusive nocturnal wildlife
- Expert guiding teams with both tracker and guide
- Ideal for wildlife enthusiasts and travelers seeking uncrowded safari experiences

ACTIVITIES
Game drives at Lebala Camp are the primary focus and are conducted in open 4×4 vehicles, with both a guide and a dedicated tracker. This two-person team enhances the chance of sightings, especially of elusive or camouflaged animals. The surrounding plains are known for exceptional predator activity, including wild dog packs, lions, leopards, and cheetahs. Large herds of elephant and buffalo roam the area, and sightings of sable, roan, tsessebe, and lechwe are common.
Lebala is particularly well-known for its night drives. After sundown, the plains come alive with nocturnal activity. Using spotlights, guides search for elusive species such as aardwolf, genet, African wildcat, and Selous mongoose. Nightjars, owls, and other nocturnal bird species also feature prominently in evening drives.
Walking safaris are offered year-round, depending on animal movement and safety considerations. These guided excursions reveal the smaller wonders of the bush, from tracks and plants to the hidden behavior of birds and insects. When water levels permit, guests can also enjoy seasonal boat excursions through nearby channels, offering a peaceful contrast to the land-based safaris and an opportunity to observe aquatic life and riverine bird species.
