GONAREZHOU NATIONAL PARK

Gonarezhou National Park is one of Zimbabwe’s most remote and pristine wilderness areas, located in the southeast of the country along the border with Mozambique. Covering more than 5,000 km², it is the second-largest national park in Zimbabwe and forms an integral part of the Greater Limpopo Transfrontier Park, which links conservation areas across Zimbabwe, South Africa, and Mozambique.

The park is characterised by its dramatic river systems—the Mwenezi River in the west, the Runde River flowing through its centre, and the Save River along its eastern boundary—all of which play a crucial role in supporting a rich diversity of wildlife. True to its name, which translates to “the place of many elephants,” Gonarezhou is home to over 11,500 elephants. Visitors may also encounter lions, wild dogs, hyenas, and giraffes, among other species.

The dry season, from May to October, offers ideal conditions for game viewing as wildlife congregates around the rivers and remaining water sources. Gonarezhou is best accessed via charter flights from Victoria Falls or Harare, though it is also reachable by road for adventurous travellers.
