Jao Camp
Jao Camp is set on a densely wooded island within the 60,000-hectare Jao Reserve, deep in the heart of the Okavango Delta. Designed to blend seamlessly with the natural environment, Jao is renowned for its architectural brilliance and refined safari experience. Surrounded by a mosaic of floodplains, lagoons, and savannah, this luxurious camp offers an exceptional balance of land and water-based safaris.
The camp accommodates a maximum of 18 guests in five individually styled, spacious suites and two exclusive villas. Each suite features a private plunge pool, a sala for relaxing midday siestas, and en suite facilities that include both indoor and outdoor showers. The two villas elevate the experience with their own private butler, chef, guide, and safari vehicle.
Jao’s central hub is divided into two distinct levels. The lower level houses a cosy lounge, a library, an expansive wine cellar, and a beautifully designed boma for al fresco dining. Wooden pathways lead guests to multiple plunge pools, each set discreetly among the palm trees. The upper level consists of a spacious thatched deck with a bar and sitting area on one side and a dining area on the other. A viewing deck with loungers, armchairs, and a telescope offers uninterrupted views over the Delta. High-level wooden walkways meander through the treetops, linking the suites to the main area.

ACTIVITIES
Jao Camp offers a diverse safari experience shaped by the shifting seasons of the Okavango Delta. During the summer months, activities focus on day and night game drives across the Jao Reserve’s mixed habitats. These drives reveal an array of wildlife including elephants, lechwe, and predators such as lions and leopards, offering excellent opportunities for photographers and wildlife enthusiasts alike.
As water levels rise in winter, the focus shifts to water-based activities. Mokoro excursions provide a peaceful and immersive way to explore the reed-fringed channels, allowing close sightings of sitatunga and red lechwe, while motorised boat cruises offer a broader view of the Delta’s rich ecosystems. These outings also bring guests closer to pods of hippos and basking crocodiles in the lagoons.
Walking safaris are available for those interested in discovering the Delta’s finer ecological details. Led by experienced guides, these walks reveal the smaller creatures, intricate plant life and the tracks that tell stories of animals that passed by.
Fishing is available on a catch-and-release basis, with basic rods and reels provided by the camp. This relaxing yet exciting activity gives guests the chance to try their hand at landing bream or tigerfish, depending on the season.
Birdwatching at Jao is particularly rewarding. The floodplains and waterways host large numbers of waterfowl, including African jacanas, wattled cranes and saddle-billed storks. The elusive sitatunga is also commonly seen wading among the reeds.
For a unique overnight adventure, guests can make use of Jao’s elevated hide, located about 20 minutes from camp. Equipped with a long-drop toilet, the hide provides a thrilling opportunity to sleep under the stars surrounded by the sounds of the Delta.
