Makgadikgadi
Covering approximately 10,000 km² of the Kalahari Basin, the Makgadikgadi Pans form one of the world’s largest salt flat systems. These ancient pans—remnants of a vast prehistoric lake—range from expansive open plains to small, pond-sized basins, surrounded by sweeping grasslands and occasional clusters of palm-dotted islands. A visit to the Makgadikgadi Pans offers an extraordinary sense of space, silence, and solitude. The vast, untamed landscape is hauntingly beautiful, with surreal sunsets casting soft pastel hues across the shimmering salt crust. By day, the windswept flats—stirred by dancing dust devils—offer an unparalleled experience of complete isolation and serenity.
Birdlife in the Makgadikgadi region is exceptionally rich and varied. Raptors such as white-backed and lappet-faced vultures, bateleurs, tawny and martial eagles, and snake eagles are commonly seen. Falcons, goshawks, and iconic species such as the kori bustard, secretary bird, ostrich, and lilac-breasted roller add to the avian diversity. The area also hosts francolins, guineafowl, korhaans, plovers, coursers, sandgrouse, spotted dikkops, owls, and a range of hornbills—making it a paradise for birding enthusiasts.
Wildlife in the region follows seasonal rhythms. After the summer rains, vast herds of zebra and wildebeest migrate eastward onto the nutrient-rich grasslands of the park, offering dramatic wildlife spectacles. During the dry winter months, these herds move westward in search of water, particularly to the Boteti River, which marks the park’s western boundary. This river is entirely reliant on Angola’s distant floods—its flow varies dramatically from year to year, sometimes arriving late or not at all, and other times transforming the landscape into a vibrant ecosystem.
Throughout the year, a number of desert-adapted species remain resident in the Makgadikgadi. These include meerkats, yellow mongoose, ground squirrels, springhares, porcupines, steenbok, kudu, jackals, honey badgers, African wildcats, aardwolves, caracals, and occasionally lions. The region is also one of the best places to encounter the elusive brown hyena, a rare and secretive scavenger. Aardvarks, suricates, and small bustard species also make their home here.
The riverine woodlands along the Boteti provide refuge for shy antelope species such as duiker and bushbuck, offering a contrasting habitat to the stark beauty of the open pans. Together, the Makgadikgadi Pans and the Boteti River corridor create a uniquely diverse and rewarding wilderness experience—where ancient landscapes, migratory marvels, and desert-adapted wildlife converge in one of Africa’s most hauntingly beautiful ecosystems.
