Abu Camp
Nestled beneath ancient sycamore figs and jackalberry trees in the heart of Botswana’s Okavango Delta, Abu Camp offers an extraordinary blend of luxury, wilderness, and conservation. Situated within a vast 180,000-hectare private concession, the camp takes its name from Abu, a famous elephant who starred in multiple films and once symbolised the original vision of the camp. Today, under new stewardship, Abu Camp has shifted its focus from human-animal interaction to the preservation of elephants and the surrounding ecosystem, offering guests an unforgettable safari experience deeply rooted in conservation and respect for wildlife.
Abu Camp is defined by its elegance and seclusion, with just six tented suites spaced widely apart for privacy and tranquility. Each suite is styled with a blend of Bedouin-inspired canvas architecture and rich African detailing. The interiors are individually decorated with antique furnishings, polished hardwood floors, plush four-poster or sleigh beds, and eclectic décor, including carved elephants, art, and handcrafted ornaments that reflect the spirit of the camp’s legacy. En suite bathrooms feature deep copper or porcelain bathtubs, and each suite opens onto a private elevated teak deck sculpted around the surrounding trees—ideal for birdwatching, reading, or simply soaking up the sights and sounds of the Delta.
The main camp area is as distinctive as the rooms, with architecture inspired by the sweeping curves of the Sydney Opera House. The central lounge, dining room, and library are built on layered teak decks around a giant termite mound, framed by the canopy of African ebony and sycamore fig trees. The atmosphere is relaxed yet refined, with antique sofas, artful touches, and a well-stocked bar offering cocktails and sundowners. Most meals are enjoyed alfresco on the deck, with the flicker of lanterns and calls of the bush creating a memorable dining backdrop. A nearby plunge pool provides a peaceful retreat during the heat of the day, while the hammock deck overlooking the lagoon invites guests to unwind as elephant, antelope, and birds pass by.

ACTIVITIES
Abu Camp offers a diverse range of safari experiences, taking full advantage of its expansive concession and varied habitats. Game drives—by day and night—are conducted in open 4×4 vehicles and explore mopane woodlands, floodplains, and seasonal wetlands. The concession is home to abundant general game including giraffe, zebra, impala, tsessebe, red lechwe, wildebeest, buffalo, and warthog. Lions frequently pass through the area, and their roars can often be heard after dark, adding to the wild ambiance of the camp.
Guided nature walks offer a chance to explore on foot and discover the smaller details of the ecosystem, from birdcalls and spoor to medicinal plants and insect life. When water levels permit, guests can also enjoy boating and mokoro (dugout canoe) safaris—peaceful, gliding journeys through crystal-clear channels and reedbeds. These excursions are particularly rewarding for birders, with sightings of pied and malachite kingfishers, rufous-bellied heron, Luapula cisticola, and white-browed coucal among the many possible highlights.
Whether navigating quiet channels by mokoro, relaxing on your private deck, or tracking wildlife on a morning drive, Abu Camp offers an unmatched opportunity to experience the Okavango Delta in privacy, comfort, and harmony with nature.
