Maun
Often referred to as Botswana’s tourism capital, Maun lies on the southern edge of the Okavango Delta. Despite recent modern developments, the town retains the character of a dusty frontier outpost—an enduring charm that captures the spirit of adventure. For many travellers, Maun is the primary gateway to the Delta, offering direct air links to Johannesburg, Cape Town, Kasane, and Gaborone.
Maun serves as the administrative centre of Ngamiland District and is the traditional seat of the Batawana tribe. The Batawana are a branch of the Bangwato people of Serowe. Following a chieftainship dispute in the late 18th century, Chief Tawana led his people to Ngamiland, eventually establishing Maun as their permanent capital in 1915 after several relocations.
Ngamiland is home to a rich tapestry of ethnic communities. Among them are the Hambukushu, Basubiya, and Bayei—groups with Central African heritage who have thrived in and around the Okavango for centuries, using its resources with deep knowledge and respect. The region is also inhabited by the Banoka, or River Bushmen, the Delta’s original people; the Bakgalagadi; and the Baherero, whose roots trace back to Namibia. The latter are easily recognised by the women’s distinctive, colourful Victorian-style dresses, seen as they stroll through Maun’s streets.
The rise of Botswana’s safari tourism industry in the 1980s brought rapid transformation to Maun. Today, it is a bustling hub for safari operators, with signposts to lodges and camps scattered across its sandy streets. A range of modern conveniences—shopping centres, hotels, guesthouses, and restaurants—have emerged to serve both tourists and residents. Visitors will find everything from international delicacies like French Champagne and artisan cheeses to everyday essentials available locally.
Yet, amid this growth, the tranquil Thamalakane River continues to wind its way through the town, offering a peaceful, timeless setting that hints at the extraordinary wilderness adventures waiting just beyond.
