Kwando Lagoon
In the remote far north of Botswana lies the vast and untamed Kwando Concession, a 2,320 square kilometre wilderness defined by its sweeping floodplains, river channels, and abundant wildlife. Along the banks of the meandering Kwando River, a permanent lagoon fringed by ancient ebony and marula trees forms the tranquil setting for Kwando Lagoon Camp—one of the region’s most rewarding safari destinations.
The camp’s position within this wild reserve places it at the heart of predator territory. Lagoon is particularly well-known for its regular sightings of lion, leopard, cheetah, and especially African wild dogs, which have denned near the camp for many years. During the dry season, large herds of elephant and buffalo are drawn to the water, while sable, roan, and red lechwe move through the open woodlands and riverbanks that define the landscape.
Kwando Lagoon accommodates 18 guests in nine classic safari-style canvas tents, one of which is a spacious two-bedroom family suite. All rooms are positioned along the water and offer sweeping views from their private verandas, where guests can often watch hippos, elephants, and even spotted-necked otters go about their daily routines. Each tent features private en suite facilities, open-air showers, and modern comforts to ensure a relaxed and restorative stay.
The main lodge is open, airy, and relaxed, designed to let the wilderness flow in. Guests can browse the small library stocked with natural history books, sip a drink on the shaded viewing deck, or cool off in the plunge pool between game drives. Breakfast is served around the open-air firepit in the boma, while evenings often end with quiet conversation and stargazing, drinks in hand, surrounded by the sounds of the bush.
Facilities at Kwando Lagoon include:
- Nine river-facing canvas tents, including one family unit
- Private verandas with lagoon views
- En suite bathrooms with outdoor showers
- Shaded lounge, library, and viewing deck
- Plunge pool with sun loungers
- Boma fire area for early breakfasts and post-dinner drinks
Why choose Kwando Lagoon Camp?
- Located in a remote, wildlife-rich private concession
- Renowned for frequent wild dog sightings and predator activity
- Direct views of the lagoon with regular elephant and hippo encounters
- Peaceful atmosphere with high levels of comfort and privacy
- Ideal for serious safari-goers, photographers, and adventurous families

ACTIVITIES
Kwando Lagoon offers a diverse range of safari activities shaped by the complex river system that surrounds the camp. Morning and afternoon game drives explore a mix of riverine forest, open plains, and seasonal pans, home to large herds of buffalo, red lechwe, impala, zebra, wildebeest, and predators such as lion, leopard, hyena, and cheetah. The camp’s long-standing reputation for wild dog sightings makes it a prime location for those hoping to witness the social behavior and high-speed hunts of these elusive carnivores.
Boating is a year-round highlight at Lagoon, thanks to the camp’s specially designed double-decker barge. Navigating the shallows and oxbow loops of the Kwando River, the barge offers a peaceful and scenic experience. The current gently carries the vessel downstream, allowing guests to float silently past pods of hippos, nesting birds, and the occasional elephant crossing. On clear days, it’s even possible to see hippos walking beneath the surface of the water.
Fishing is another signature activity at Lagoon, with opportunities to catch tigerfish, bream, catfish, and pike. The waters of the Kwando are both productive and picturesque, offering a quiet yet engaging way to spend the afternoon.
Game walks may also be offered, depending on wildlife movements and guide discretion, particularly in relation to elephant activity in the area. These walks offer a chance to explore the finer details of the ecosystem and appreciate the wilderness from ground level.
