Jack's Camp

Jack’s Camp is pitched on a low grassland knoll amongst an oasis of desert palms and Kalahari acacia alongside the awe-inspiring Ntwetwe Pan. It offers great game viewing alongside the pan, which is a haven of birdlife in the wet months and attracts bigger game during the dry months. Jack’s Camp is an iconic and incredibly unique luxury camp offering an experience not found anywhere else in Botswana.

Accommodation consists of 9 very spacious and stylish canvas tents with en suite bathrooms and comfortable living areas from where guests can enjoy the expansive views of the Kalahari. Refurbished in the traditional east African 1940’s safari style, the accommodation is authentic and comfortable with many thoughtful details, including a private plunge pool on the veranda. The tents are located in a palm grove, creating an oasis of tranquillity in the stark environment of the Kalahari.

The main area at Jack’s is outstanding, with polished wooden floors and comfortable furnishings. The library is reminiscent of a gentleman’s club and a museum, with numerous curios collected from the desert, natural history books, maps and an antique pool table. Guests will dine on sumptuous meals at the 1820’s 36-seater officer’s mess table, while the tea tent is a vision of luxury, layered with Persian rugs and cushions, ideal for decadent high teas. In addition, there is a stunning pavilion tent that houses the swimming pool where guests can relax whilst looking out over the golden grasslands of the Makgadikgadi.

ACTIVITIES

Jack’s Camp offers a unique choice of activities, allowing guests to mix wildlife, culture and a little adrenalin. Due to the pans’ seasonality, different activities are offered throughout the year. In the dry winter months, guests will have the opportunity to travel across the saltpans on the camp’s quad bikes to a spot where guests can view the earth’s curvature and feel like they are the only people on the planet. For guests who want something different, there is a unique opportunity to combine three nights at Jack’s Camp with an epic quad bike journey across the Makgadikgadi Pans, with two nights spent sleeping out under the stars amongst the boulders and baobabs on remote Kubu Island.

Year-round activities include a visit to Chapman’s Baobab and walks with a Bushman tracker, where guests can truly appreciate what it takes to survive in this environment. Guests can also enjoy day and night drives to see a variety of animals, including gemsbok, springbok, aardvark, lion, cheetah and the very shy brown hyena.

During the wet summer months (November to April), when the landscape is transformed, the focus is on the thousands of zebra which migrate from the Boteti River and Makgadikgadi Pans National Park. In addition, after the rains, when the pans fill with water, numerous species of birds, from flamingos to wattled cranes and pelicans, descend from the skies to feed in the watery grasslands. During the dry or winter months, the migrations move westwards, but many desert-adapted creatures remain resident.
