Kalahari
At approximately 52,800 km²—an area larger than Denmark—the Central Kalahari Game Reserve (CKGR) is the largest protected reserve in Botswana and the second-largest in the world. Established in 1961, it occupies the remote heart of Botswana and offers a dramatic landscape of sweeping arid plains, saltpans, and ancient riverbeds. The terrain transitions from rolling sand dunes and scattered acacia in the north, to flat bushveld across the central regions, and dense mopane woodlands in the southern and eastern parts of the reserve.
Following the summer rains, the northern plains of the CKGR transform into one of Botswana’s premier wildlife viewing areas. The landscape erupts in vibrant grasses and seasonal wildflowers, drawing large herds of gemsbok (oryx), springbok, and wildebeest, along with predators such as lion, cheetah, and jackal. The dramatic cloudscapes and fiery sunsets during this time add to the region’s unique allure.
The reserve supports an impressive range of desert-adapted predators and mammals. Among the predators that may be encountered are lion, leopard, cheetah, African wild dog, spotted and brown hyena, caracal, aardwolf, African wildcat, black-backed jackal, honey badger, and bat-eared and Cape foxes. Smaller carnivores such as meerkats, genets, polecats, and several mongoose species also thrive here. The diverse herbivore population includes hartebeest, duiker, gemsbok, springbok, wildebeest, and smaller mammals such as springhares and porcupines.
Bordering the reserve to the north is the Hainaveld region, a collection of private concessions and farms offering easier access to the Kalahari wilderness. This area is well-known for birding, abundant wildlife, and cultural interactions with the indigenous San (Bushmen) communities. Visitors can enjoy guided nature walks, engage in traditional bushman experiences, or take part in game drives through the dramatic desert landscape. Wildlife sightings may include giraffes, ostriches, and desert-adapted antelope species such as gemsbok and springbok.
The Central Kalahari and surrounding Hainaveld region offer a truly authentic African wilderness experience—untouched, expansive, and deeply evocative of the Kalahari’s timeless rhythm.
