jacana camp
Jacana Camp is nestled on a heart-shaped island in the Jao Flats of the Okavango Delta. Surrounded by lush floodplains and groves of date palms, the camp has the feel of a remote tropical hideaway. As a true water-based camp, Jacana offers guests an immersive Delta experience in one of the most pristine wetland environments in Botswana. The area supports a high density of water-adapted wildlife and is especially rich in birdlife, including sought-after species such as the Pel’s fishing owl and both greater and lesser jacanas.
The camp accommodates guests in 5 Meru-style tents built on raised wooden decks. Each tent features panoramic views over the floodplains, with a private balcony and comfortable seating to take in the scenery. The en suite bathrooms are enclosed but roofless, allowing guests to shower beneath the stars. The tents are accessed via wooden walkways that wind through the island’s dense vegetation, providing a sense of seclusion and tranquillity.
Jacana’s main lodge is a two-storey, thatch-roofed structure with an open-sided dining room and a lounge area upstairs, offering sweeping views of the surrounding wetlands. The open-air design ensures guests are always connected to nature. A small plunge pool with loungers provides a cool respite in the heat of the day, and the evening campfire behind the bar offers a cosy gathering place to reflect on the day’s sightings.
Facilities at Jacana Camp include:
- 5 Meru-style tents with en suite, open-air bathrooms
- Private viewing balconies overlooking the floodplains
- Two-storey main lodge with lounge and dining areas
- Plunge pool with sun loungers and umbrellas
- Campfire area for evening relaxation
- Raised walkways connecting the tents and main area

ACTIVITIES
Jacana Camp offers an intimate exploration of the Okavango Delta’s watery wilderness. Year-round mokoro excursions allow guests to glide silently through reed-lined channels, coming close to sitatunga, red lechwe and an astonishing variety of birds. Walking safaris offer a different perspective, focusing on the Delta’s plant life, animal tracks and smaller fauna.
During the drier months, typically between September and May, game drives are offered when water levels allow, providing a chance to see lions, leopards, elephants and buffalo that move through the area. Fishing, offered on a catch-and-release basis, is another option for guests interested in the Delta’s aquatic life.
Birdwatching is a major highlight at Jacana, with sightings of wattled cranes, slaty egrets, kingfishers, herons, ground hornbills, African darters and saddle-billed storks among many others. The presence of both greater and lesser jacanas, along with the elusive Pel’s fishing owl, makes Jacana Camp a favourite destination for birding enthusiasts.
