Eagle Island Lodge

Eagle Island Lodge is set on the island of Xaxaba in the heart of Botswana’s Okavango Delta, one of the most pristine wetland ecosystems on earth. Surrounded by Illala Palms and overlooking a serene lagoon, the lodge offers front-row access to the tranquil waterways and diverse wildlife of this UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Delta is particularly known for its abundant birdlife, including raptors like the iconic African fish eagle, as well as seasonal mammal migrations and rich aquatic biodiversity.

Eagle Island Lodge offers 12 luxurious tented rooms built on raised wooden platforms and shaded by traditional thatch roofs. Each tent is designed to immerse guests in the wilderness while providing the comforts of modern living. Private wooden decks furnished with hammocks and armchairs open out to expansive views of the Delta, ideal for quiet wildlife watching. Inside, each tent is elegantly appointed with four-poster beds, mosquito netting, air-conditioning, and a large en suite bathroom.

For guests seeking an even more exclusive retreat, the lodge offers a secluded private suite featuring a heated splash pool, open-air double showers, and a deep copper Victorian-style bathtub under the canopy of trees. This suite also includes a private safari vehicle and personal guide for a tailored game-viewing experience.

The main lodge features open-air dining, bar, and lounge areas where guests can enjoy freshly prepared meals under the African sky. The renowned Fish Eagle Bar, perched at the water’s edge, is the perfect setting for sundowners as the Delta transforms in the golden evening light. In the evenings, guests can gather around the campfire or relax in the library, which includes a curated collection of books and multimedia about the Delta’s wildlife and ecology.

ACTIVITIES

Eagle Island Lodge offers an array of experiences that shift with the Delta’s seasonal water levels. From April to October, guests explore the surrounding lagoons and floodplains by traditional mokoro (dugout canoe), motorised boat, or a comfortable sundowner barge. These excursions offer close encounters with hippos, crocodiles, water-adapted antelope like the red lechwe, and a stunning variety of bird species.

During the low-water season from December to March, the focus shifts to land-based game drives in open 4×4 vehicles, allowing guests to access drier areas for sightings of elephants, giraffes, and predators such as lions and leopards. Guided bush walks are available year-round and offer an intimate look at the Delta’s plant life, insects, and tracking techniques.

As a highlight of every stay, guests enjoy a complimentary 45-minute scenic helicopter flight that provides a breathtaking aerial view of the Delta’s intricate channels and wildlife from above. Fishing excursions along the Boro River are also available, with tilapia, catfish, and freshwater pike among the common catches. Fishing is conducted on a strict catch-and-release basis.
