Camp Xakanaxa
Camp Xakanaxa enjoys a prime location on the banks of the Khwai River in the heart of the Moremi Game Reserve, making it one of the few camps able to offer an authentic year-round Okavango Delta experience. The camp is set beside the Xakanaxa Lagoon and provides a seamless blend of land and water activities in one of the most wildlife-rich areas of Botswana. As one of the oldest camps in the reserve, Xakanaxa has a long-standing reputation for quality guiding and warm hospitality.
Accommodation at Camp Xakanaxa consists of 12 classic Meru-style safari tents, including a spacious family tent. Each tent is set on raised wooden platforms and elegantly furnished with en suite bathrooms. Private viewing decks overlook the river and provide tranquil spots for wildlife watching in comfort. The tents’ thatched roofs and canvas sides create a classic safari ambience while offering excellent protection from the elements.
The camp’s central area, built from local timber, reed, and thatch, is styled with African décor and features an inviting lounge, a well-stocked library, and a dining room set on raised decking for superb views over the lagoon. A spacious sun deck with a plunge pool and shaded sala invites relaxation during the day, while evenings are centred around the open-air fire deck beneath towering jackalberry trees. Meals are typically served in the communal dining area, but private dining can also be arranged for a more intimate experience.
Facilities at Camp Xakanaxa include:
- 12 Meru-style safari tents, including a family unit, each with en suite facilities
- Private viewing decks overlooking the Khwai River
- Raised main lodge with lounge, dining room and library
- Plunge pool and shaded deck area
- Fire deck beneath jackalberry trees
- Year-round boating and game drives from the lodge
Why choose Camp Xakanaxa?
- Located within Moremi Game Reserve for year-round land and water activities
- Access to both floodplains and dry woodlands ensures diverse game sightings
- Established camp with a strong guiding team and safari heritage
- Proximity to one of the Delta’s most renowned heronries
- Lagoon-side setting with abundant wildlife visible from camp

ACTIVITIES
Camp Xakanaxa offers a comprehensive safari experience with both land and water-based activities conducted year-round. The camp is ideally situated between the permanent lagoons and waterways of the Okavango Delta to the north and west, and the dry woodlands and savannah of the reserve to the south and east, ensuring excellent wildlife viewing opportunities.
Game drives in open 4×4 vehicles explore the diverse habitats of the Moremi Game Reserve, where guests may encounter elephant, giraffe, buffalo, lechwe, kudu, sable, tsessebe, impala and wildebeest. The reserve is also home to healthy predator populations, including lion, leopard, cheetah, hyena and African wild dog.
Boating safaris across the Xakanaxa Lagoon provide access to pristine channels and floodplains, with opportunities to spot water-adapted species such as hippo, red lechwe, waterbuck, crocodile and the elusive sitatunga antelope. The region is also one of the best birding areas in the Delta, especially in spring and summer, when thousands of herons and storks gather at the nearby heronries to breed.
As Camp Xakanaxa is located inside the national park boundaries of Moremi, walking safaris, night drives, off-road driving and fishing are not permitted. However, the combination of expert guiding, scenic landscapes and abundant wildlife ensures a rich and fulfilling safari experience.
