Chobe and Linyanti
Chobe National Park, Botswana
Located in northern Botswana, Chobe National Park spans approximately 11,000 km² and is bordered to the north by the Chobe River, which forms the natural boundary between Botswana and Namibia. As Botswana’s second-largest national park, Chobe is renowned for its exceptional year-round game viewing and is home to one of the largest concentrations of wildlife on the African continent. The park is particularly famous for its vast herds of African elephants, with sightings of groups numbering over a hundred being common along the riverbanks.
Chobe National Park comprises four distinct ecological regions, each offering a unique safari experience:
Serondela (Chobe Riverfront): Located in the northeast, this area features lush floodplains and dense riverine forests that attract large numbers of elephants and buffalo. Due to its proximity to Victoria Falls, the Serondela area is the most frequently visited part of the park.
Savuti Marsh: Situated in the western region of the park, Savuti is bisected by the Savuti Channel, which feeds into the expansive Savuti Marsh. Known for its dramatic wildlife interactions and frequently featured in National Geographic documentaries by Dereck and Beverly Joubert, this area boasts open grasslands, savannah woodlands, and diverse vegetation.
Linyanti Swamps: Located in the northwest, the Linyanti region offers a striking contrast of riverine and dry woodland habitats. The Linyanti River and surrounding marshes draw significant wildlife, particularly during the dry season, when elephants and buffalo congregate in large numbers. The area is also known for its predator sightings.
Nogatsaa and Tchinga: Found in the park’s remote interior, this hot and arid region is ideal for the more adventurous traveller. Holding water well into the dry months, it attracts a high density of game between August and October and is one of the best areas to view eland.
Wildlife in Chobe National Park is abundant and diverse. Massive herds of elephants, buffalo, and Burchell’s zebra dominate the landscape, supporting a healthy population of predators such as lion, leopard, spotted hyena, and cheetah. The park also shelters rare and less commonly seen antelope species, including roan, sable, puku, tsessebe, eland, red lechwe, waterbuck, and the elusive Chobe bushbuck. More widespread species such as giraffe, kudu, warthog, wildebeest, and impala are also plentiful.
Access to Chobe National Park is convenient by both road and air. The park lies just outside the town of Kasane, which is serviced by Kasane International Airport. Kasane, situated on the banks of the Chobe River, offers a wide range of accommodation options, from campsites to upscale lodges and hotels. The park is also easily reached from Victoria Falls Airport in Zimbabwe or via road transfers from Livingstone, Zambia. Combining a visit to Chobe National Park with a stay in Victoria Falls offers travellers an unforgettable safari experience enriched by both wildlife and natural wonder.
