Xugana Island Lodge

Xugana Island Lodge Okavango Delta is perfectly positioned on the edge of Xugana Lagoon, one of the Delta’s most spectacular permanent water sites. This serene corner of the Okavango offers a pristine water wilderness of clear channels, papyrus beds, tranquil lagoons, and wooded islands. As a result, the lodge is ideal for guests seeking an immersive, water-based safari in a peaceful setting.

The lodge accommodates up to 16 guests in eight spacious reed-and-thatch chalets, each raised on teak platforms overlooking the lagoon. Each chalet includes an en suite bathroom and a private viewing deck. In addition, the open-air design and natural materials allow the rooms to blend seamlessly into the surrounding forest and wetland.

Meanwhile, the main lodge area features open-sided thatched structures set beneath ebony and African mangosteen trees. These include a lounge, bar, and open-air dining area, all with views over the lagoon. Meals are served al fresco or in the open boma, creating a relaxed and atmospheric dining experience. At the centre of the island, a shaded swimming pool sits among lush gardens, offering a cool retreat during the day.

ACTIVITIES

Xugana Island Lodge offers a tranquil way to explore the Okavango Delta’s aquatic ecosystem. The camp specialises in mokoro excursions, where guests are guided through papyrus-lined channels in traditional dugout canoes. As a result, these quiet journeys bring guests close to aquatic wildlife, including sitatunga antelope, red lechwe, and a variety of birds and amphibians.

In addition, guided bush walks on nearby islands provide a different perspective. Expert guides highlight tracks, plants, insects, and birdlife along the way. These walks suit a range of fitness levels and allow guests to experience the Delta on foot.

Meanwhile, birdwatching is a highlight at Xugana. The wetland environment attracts a wide range of species, including malachite and pied kingfishers, African jacanas, darters, and fish eagles. Keen birders may also spot rarer species such as Pel’s fishing owl and the slaty egret.

Fishing is available seasonally on a catch-and-release basis. Guests can try to catch bream or tigerfish, with excursions usually taking place in the early morning or late afternoon.
