Camp Xakanaxa

Camp Xakanaxa is ideally located on the banks of the Khwai River in the heart of Moremi Game Reserve. As one of the few camps offering a true year-round Okavango Delta experience, it combines both land and water activities in a wildlife-rich setting. In addition, its position beside the Xakanaxa Lagoon enhances the diversity of sightings. As one of the oldest camps in the reserve, it also has a strong reputation for experienced guiding and warm hospitality.

Accommodation at Camp Xakanaxa consists of 12 classic Meru-style safari tents, including a spacious family unit. Each tent is raised on a wooden platform and features an en suite bathroom.

Private viewing decks overlook the river, creating a peaceful space for wildlife viewing. Meanwhile, the thatched roofs and canvas sides maintain a traditional safari feel while offering comfort and protection.

The central lodge area is built from local timber, reed, and thatch, and reflects a classic African design. It includes a comfortable lounge, a well-stocked library, and a dining area set on raised decking with views over the lagoon. During the day, guests can relax on the sun deck, which features a plunge pool and shaded seating. In the evenings, the open-air fire deck beneath jackalberry trees provides a welcoming gathering space. Meals are typically served in the communal dining area, although private dining can be arranged.

ACTIVITIES

Camp Xakanaxa offers a well-rounded safari with both land and water-based activities throughout the year. The camp sits between the permanent waterways of the Okavango Delta and the drier woodlands of Moremi. As a result, guests experience a wide variety of habitats and wildlife.

Game drives in open 4×4 vehicles explore the reserve’s diverse terrain. Guests may encounter elephant, giraffe, buffalo, lechwe, kudu, sable, tsessebe, impala, and wildebeest. In addition, the area supports strong predator populations, including lion, leopard, cheetah, hyena, and African wild dog.

Meanwhile, boating safaris across the Xakanaxa Lagoon provide access to quiet channels and floodplains. These excursions offer sightings of hippo, red lechwe, waterbuck, crocodile, and the elusive sitatunga antelope. The region is also excellent for birding, particularly in spring and summer, when herons and storks gather at nearby breeding sites.

As Camp Xakanaxa lies within Moremi Game Reserve, certain activities are restricted. Walking safaris, night drives, off-road driving, and fishing are not permitted. However, the combination of expert guiding, varied landscapes, and abundant wildlife ensures a rewarding safari experience.
