vumbura plains camp

North of the Okavango Delta

Split into two main camps, North Camp and South Camp, this luxury camp has 14 rooms, all raised on wooden platforms and connected by a raised walkway. Vumbura Plains Camp offers land and water activities in a 60000-hectare private concession with a spectacular variety of habitats and a great diversity of wildlife.

The 2 satellite camps that comprise Vumbura Plains have their own dining, lounge and bar areas. Vumbura Plains South is slightly smaller with 6 rooms, while Vumbura Plains North is more family-friendly, consisting of 8 rooms, 2 of which are dedicated family rooms. All the spacious, luxury rooms are on raised decks with elevated walkways connecting them to the main areas. The wood, glass and thatch suites have a large, luxurious bedroom, a lounge, a 'sala' and en suite facilities. Gauze dividers separate sleeping and lounging areas while sliding doors open onto private decks with a shaded sofa and table near the plunge pools with wilderness views.

The main areas at Vumbura Plains are raised and situated under shady, indigenous trees with wonderful views across the Okavango Delta floodplains. The interiors are stylish, with various carvings and contemporary African sculptures strategically placed around the raised and sunken areas, with built-in sofas scattered with many cushions. A shady deck overlooks the surrounding landscape with a telescope for guests' use, and the large dining area is open-sided, offering panoramic views over the surrounding plains.

Activities

Vumbura Plains offers land and water activities; game viewing in 4x4 vehicles, nature walks, mokoro trips, boat excursions and fishing. The combination of riverine and savannah woodland boasts a prolific range of wildlife, including red lechwe, waterbuck, kudu, wildebeest, tsessebe, hippos and crocodiles; the rare sable is common here, as are large herds of elephant and buffalo. The diversity of habitats means that Vumbura Plains is possibly the only area in the Okavango where one can see red lechwe and sable antelope on the same game drive. The reserve is also home to lion, leopard, cheetah, wild dog and hyena. Bird-watching combines the best of both worlds with the Okavango specials and acacia and dry woodland species, with the possibility of sighting some endangered species, such as the stately wattled crane, slaty egret, white-backed night heron and the Pel's fishing owl.

Why we like Vumbura Plains Camp
