Camp Xakanaxa

The northern sector of Moremi Game Reserve.

Camp Xakanaxa 's prime location on the banks of the Khwai River, in the heart of Moremi Game Reserve, ensures that it is one of the few safari camps which can provide guests with an authentic year-round Okavango Delta land and water safari experience. Comprehensive year-round boating and mokoro trips, as well as game drives into excellent wildlife country, combined with being one of the oldest and most well-established in the reserve, makes Xakanaxa a popular choice with guests.

Accommodation consists of 12 Meru-style classic luxury safari tents, including a family tent set on wooden platforms with en suite facilities. The safari tents are tastefully furnished and overlook the Khwai River. Each tent has a private viewing deck to make the most of its lagoon -side (Xakanaxa Lagoon) position. Comfortable loungers on the deck provide an ideal retreat for private game viewing.

The stylish African-themed central buildings extend into the Khwai River and are set on raised platforms to ensure fantastic views over the surrounding lagoons and islands. The main area, constructed of local timber, reed and thatch, comprises an elegant lounge containing a comprehensive library and dining room. An expansive sundeck with a plunge pool and sala is the perfect place to relax in the heat of the day. A fire-deck set under giant Jackalberry trees welcomes guests to socialise around a roaring fire at night. The kitchen is renowned for its traditional safari fare served with a Pan-African touch. Meals at Xakanaxa Camp are usually enjoyed in the dining room, but guests wishing to dine in private will also be catered for.

Activities

To the north and west of Camp Xakanaxa are the permanent lagoons and waterways of the Okavango Delta, and to the south and east are the dry woodlands. Birding is spectacular, especially during spring and summer when the migrants breed. Huge numbers of breeding storks and herons are attracted to the world-famous heronries, which lie north of Xakanaxa. Game viewing in open 4x4 vehicles offers guests the chance to see elephants, sable, giraffes, tsessebe, lechwe, wildebeest, kudu and impala, and the Moremi Game Reserve predators, including lions, leopards, cheetahs, wild dogs and hyenas. Additional boating safaris across the Xakanaxa Lagoon are also offered from Camp Xakanaxa. Buffalo, hippo, crocodile, red lechwe, waterbuck and sitatunga antelope are some of the water-adapted species guests can expect to see at Xakanaxa. Professional, conservation-aware guides lead all activities. As Camp Xakanaxa is in the Moremi Game Reserve, it is not possible to take part in walking safaris, off-road driving, night drives or fishing.
